Independent Media: The Administration Series

Tuesday, November 26, 2013
The Administration Series is a series of novels written by the talented Manna Francis.  The series is categorized under fiction featuring LGBT themes and science fiction (figures).  Francis has been writing original 'slash' fiction since 2002.  Her series centers Val Torth who works as a 'bad cop' with the law and thus, gets his hands dirty in the midst of conspiracies and lies, with the flare of science fiction ideals of a digital world.  Francis is influenced by the surge of slash fiction that can be dated back to the original explosion of Star Trek.  Slash fiction is still a large pop culture group today, holding a ridiculously large fanbase and even having conventions for these fans.  Francis is an independent writer, having published the first book before it was out on her website as ongoing original fiction.  She started publishing her series a few years after she released the first book online, but never took it down.

Francis' books, due to their nature, are published by a small, independent company that publishes fiction of all kinds.  Francis currently has eight books out and is planning to continue with more.  It's obvious that the sales for these books aren't through the roof, yet their small popularity in the fandom of slash is what keeps the publishers to keep putting out the series.  As these series is not funded by a large corporation, or even the fact that Francis is probably making very little money off them, express how this is part of the independent media ideal.  She's publishing her works with edits by big names and by her own will for an audience looking for that specific thing.

Speaking of her audience, Francis' focuses on adults, mostly those who enjoy slash fiction but crave a heavy plot and character development.  The series is packed with science fiction terminology, easily losing anyone who doesn't personally enjoy the genre.  Thus, her audience is the type who can pay for the books and remain fans.

Manna Francis' work is of import because it breaks the mold on what's the limitations of science fiction hold.  Thus, her work matters because it allows a whole new take on a genre, just as Starfighter did, but without the comic format.  It's even more interesting by the fact that it's a novel.  It doesn't really matter to the rest of the world, though, as it's barely out there in stores and only a few selected within the masses truly enjoy this type of fiction.

  1. Good job here. This is a solid sense of what independent publishing can look like. 5/5
