Independent Media: Creep Street

Monday, December 16, 2013
Creep Street is a group of men who started their own fashion line.  They cater to a culture that digs everything B-grade in life, including horror flicks to rugged cliques.  Their work is inspired by a love of neon colors and zombies, skateboarding, music, Hamburger Helper, bad commercials and other weird and creepy things.  Creep Street has quickly become one of the major players in the fashion scene on the streets.

Creep Street started locally and grew in rapid popularity, having started in San Francisco and spread like the plague via the internet. They're known for their dark style as well as their offensive clothing and bold colors.  Despite their growing fans, they remain controlled only by a handful of unnamed men who design the clothing, print the tees, and send them out online.  They work with other groups of independent designers and host shows but they remain alone in their market.  This makes Creep Street another form of independent media as it is not supported by backers and run only by a handful of people.

Creep Street is intended for adults, usually due to their offensive language on some of their clothing (which I admittedly own a few).  They also tend to make references to older horror films that those of the younger generation, or people without a love of B-rated films, would not understand.

Creep Street matters in a sense because it's a culture phenomenon.  It sprung from nowhere on the internet and slowly started to create such a following.  It's run by a small group and thus is independent because they do not rely on anything but their sales to produce money.
